WHAT ARE WE UP TO?

Looking for Wildlife, Nancy Angus

Artist statement

There is nothing that I like better than to go for a walk…to be out in the fresh air traipsing long a quiet bit of coastline or river, or rambling through forests or moorland makers me feel at peace with the world. And while I am walking I am looking out for wildlife,…especially birds.

Back at home, I record my encounters with these beautiful creatures, making a picture after seeing a bird in the wild means that each picture has a particular memory for me, of the place and time that I saw it.

Through my interest in birds I have found out much more about them - when and where to see different species and about the challenges they face. There is still so much to learn, and what started as a passing interest has become an enduring passion.

I make the birds using cut paper and collage. The backgrounds are painted and the collage placed on it, then I work the two elements together until I am happy with the result.

I originally trained in ceramics and for many years I worked as a potter and teacher, until I changed to working with paper and paint about 10 years ago. Nowadays, when I am not working in my studio at home, I work as a paint effects specialist and help run a props and scenery making company with my husband.

When time allows, we go away in our camper van, exploring the countryside, binoculars at the ready, always hoping for the sight of a gorgeous bird to inspire the next painting.

Nancy’s show comprises 20 framed mixed media collage artworks and will run until Monday 30th of May.

It can be viewed at the Level Best Art Cafe Gallery
between the hours of 9am to 4pm, Monday - Friday
