Artist Statement
“From intricate scalpel paper – cuts to speed – paintings and sketching, my artwork spans a vast spectrum between precision and free- flowing energy.”
Lois Cordelia (ASGFA) is a prolific artist and illustrator in cut-paper, acrylics and mixed media, based at her studio in Ipswich. She works in diverse styles and mediums, including intricate scalpel paper-cut designs, energetic speed-painting and sketching, and mixed –media sculpture. She specialises in illustration and personalised gift commissions. Her website (www.loiscordelia.com) includes a comprehensive portfolio and dynamic record of her schedule of exhibitions, live art demos, workshops, talks, collaborations, publications, and other events.
Since 1999, Lois has worked as an assistant in the west London studio of children’s author-illustrator Jan Pienkowski (born 1936), best known for his Meg and Mog series (with co-author Helen Nicoll), pop-up books including Haunted House, and several volumes of fairytale silhouette illustrations.
In 2006, Lois graduated from the University of Edinburgh with a first level honours degree in Arabic. The effortless beauty of Arabic script has been another major influence in her drawing techniques. In 2015, she was elected an associate member of the Society of Graphic Fine Art.
