David's Dance
Silhouette paper-cut, cut by hand using a scalpel. 2014
Inspired by the biblical verse:
“And David danced before the LORD with all his might”
(2 Samuel, chapter 6 verse 14).
King David throws his heart, soul and body into the ecstatic throes of the dance. An energetic freehand sketch conveys the intense, almost violent energy of the dancer. The very nerves, sinews and fibres of his body threaten to unravel and disintegrate, yet he throws himself fearlessly into the unknown. Through his dance, David celebrates the human body, yet remains
painfully aware of its fragility.
“You must have chaos within you to give birth to a dancing star.”
~ Friedrich Nietzsche

Cosmic Lion
Silhouette paper-cut, cut by hand using a scalpel. 2014
The lion is a universal symbol: courage, strength, ferocity, nobility, royalty, leadership, the Christ, and the Sun. He is the undisputed King; the whole of creation revolves around him, as the planets orbit the Sun. The thorns are a reference to Christ's crown.

Mohican

The defiant gaze of a rebellious spirit turns away, deliberately not looking into the empty space inside the confines of the 'box',
but out of the picture, into the unknown.

Harmonious colours evoke a calm, balanced spirit, while the warm tones of Hessian and gold in the background suggest a close bond with the earth and nature. Details of furrowed skin textures are picked out with intricate cuts of the scalpel blade; a noble face tells a powerful and moving story of life's hardships.

Portrait of the French-Bulgarian spiritual master, Omraam Mikhaël Aïvanhov (1900-1986), who has been a great inspiration
