Upcoming show at Level Best Art Cafe

We are very excited to be able to have a talented artist create all new work specifically for this show. Lois Cordelia is making images by cutting paper to make silhouttes as well as some painting and her work is highly detailed and intricate. We will share more with you next week when the work is done but for now we hope you will enjoy these previews.

Lois' show will run from 28th July - 22nd August, Monday - Friday, 9am - 4pm only at the Level Best Art Cafe.

"From intricate paper silhouettes, painstakingly cut by hand using a surgical scalpel, to fast and furiously painted portraits and landscapes in brilliant, dramatic colours, my artwork spans a vast spectrum between precision and free-flowing energy."

Lois Cordelia is a prolific artist and illustrator in cut-paper, acrylics and mixed media, based at her studio in Ipswich, United Kingdom. She works in diverse styles, ranging from intricate silhouette paper-cut designs to bold and energetic acrylic paintings.

Lois likes to explore themes of energy, flow, dance and movement, evoking these through sweeping lines and brushstrokes. Her paintings are usually created within one to four hours maximum, to preserve their initial energy. In the case of the paper-cuts, an equally energetic freehand sketch forms the basis of a precise design that is then cut out of the paper, piece by piece, choosing which lines and shapes to cut and which to leave intact, to achieve an aesthetic balance between positive and negative and between the blade's precision and free-flowing lines. The result is often a spidery web of fine interconnected paper strands.

Lois' work is inspired by cultures, mythologies, languages and spiritual traditions from around the world. It has been featured in a short film, Habibti (Panacea Productions, London, March 2010), and as front cover and vignette book illustrations (Birdbook, Sidekick Books, 2011).

Since 1999, Lois has worked as an assistant in the west London studio of children's author-illustrator Jan Pienkowski (born 1936), best known for his Meg and Mog series (with co-author Helen Nicoll), pop-up books including Haunted House, and several volumes of fairytale silhouette illustrations.

In 2011 Lois Cordelia was interviewed by Kirsten Irving of 'Sidekick Books'.
